Spotlight on Two Birds

What’s cool about Two Birds Brewing? Well, for starters Two Birds is the first female owned Australian brewery. Owners Jayne Lewis and Danielle Allen started on their journey in 2011 and haven’t looked back since. These ladies bring much needed diversity to a pretty homogeneous industry. Not only do Jayne and Danielle bring diversity to the craft beer industry, but also bring to the table some pretty delicious session beers. On their website Two Birds’ philosophy is to “make the kind of beers that we enjoy drinking, so we make beers that have flavour and interest, while being clean, sessionable and approachable”. At first I was a little skeptical until I tried their flagship Golden Ale (See below for review). Two Birds also brews a Sunset Ale, which is an Amber ale that tastes a lot like New Belgians Fat Tire, and a beer called Taco. Taco is a wheat and corn beer that has coriander and lime added to resemble to flavors often associated with tacos. Keep an eye on this brewery, they’re bound to be international soon enough. Two Birds also has a tasting room and restaurant where they have even more beers on tap. I haven’t been there yet, but it’s definitely on my list of breweries to visit.

2 Birds GoldenGolden Ale, Two Birds Brewing, VIC        Golden Ale         ABV: 4.4%

Colour: Light Golden             Aroma: Passionfruit, malty sweetness

Light to medium body, good honey sweetness, accented with passionfruit hoppiness, that has a bitter, but clean finish. For being just 4.4% this light-weight holds its own. Well balanced between sweet and bitter. Good amount of carbonation, not over done. The lighter body and clean finish make this a very refreshing beer that is excellent during the warm summer days and nights, but has enough character to be drunk anytime. I could definitely have a couple of these. I can see why this was the first beer they went with.

Overall: 8/10

2 Birds SessionBantam, Two Birds Brewing, VIC     Session IPA        ABV: 4.7%

Colour:Pale Golden       Aroma: Fruity, mango, hoppiness

Light to medium body, that is has a distinct pale malt flavour breadiness, with a hint of sweetness. The hop character is very fruity, I get mango, and other fruits, that I just can’t quite pin down. The is also hit slight taste of resin. Not overly bitter. The finish has a little bit of lingering sweetness and bitterness mixed together. A very enjoyable session IPA. I would have like a little more from the malts, but having a simpler malt bill allows for the full character of the hops to come through.

Overall: 8/10
